Gold, Silver Fall As Global Bond Yields Surge
Higher Yields Elevate The Opportunity Cost Of Holding Non-Yielding Assets Like Bullion, Weighing Heavily On Sentiment Across Commodity Markets.
Gold and silver futures slipped on the MCX. The benchmark October contract for gold dipped Rs 69 to Rs 154,193 per 10 grams after opening at Rs 153,900. Prices hovered between a low of Rs 153,900 and a session high of Rs 154,326, down from its yearly peak of Rs 180,779.
MCX Silver: The benchmark September contract dropped Rs 2,181 to Rs 230,238 per kilogram. During the session, prices fluctuated between Rs 229,666 and Rs 230,528, well beneath the yearly high of Rs 420,048.
Despite the immediate pressure from soaring bond yields, commodity strategists note that downside risks may be capped as traders continue to price in reduced odds of further rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, which could offer underlying support to metals over the medium term.
Yields on the benchmark 30-year U.S. Treasury bond touched a 19-year high in morning trading, while sovereign debt yields in major economies spiked to multi-decade peaks. Higher yields elevate the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like bullion, weighing heavily on sentiment across commodity markets.
