Saurabh Gadgil Opens The Book On A Legacy, A Life and The Choices That Shaped Both

Message To Students, Managers and Entrepreneurs: Learn From Success, But Learn Even More From Failure

Sachin Jain, Regional CEO, India, World Gold Council, in conversation with Saurabh Gadgil, Chairman & Managing Director, PNG Jewellers, was quite literally 24-karat gold.

At the heart of the conversation was Gadgil’s memoir, Choosing Gold—but the spotlight was not on PNG Jewellers or its formidable 194-year legacy. It was on the man behind the legacy: his choices, convictions, successes, failures and the lessons life taught him along the way. The question at the heart of the conversation was simple yet profound:
What does it take to inherit a 194-year-old legacy—and then find the courage to make it your own?

For Gadgil, the answer lies in the choices made along the way.

Choosing Gold is not a corporate success story dressed up as a memoir. It is a candid, deeply personal account of growing up within a legendary family business, inheriting it at a young age and navigating the pressure, uncertainty and responsibility that came with it.

The book opens the door to the moments that shaped him—conversations with his grandfather and mother, the wisdom of Dajikaka, family support, difficult crossroads and decisions where conviction often mattered more than certainty.

Some choices delivered success. Others brought risk, resistance and failure. And, as Gadgil reflected, both are equally important teachers.

His message was particularly powerful for students, managers and entrepreneurs: learn from success, but learn even more from failure. Life is rarely linear; it comes with twists, turns and unexpected detours. The real test is how calmly and consciously we navigate them.

Gadgil also spoke passionately about people being an organisation’s greatest asset. For him, culture is not what a company claims to be—it is who you truly are, and what you want your organisation to become.

Leadership, he believes, begins with the self. A healthy mind and a healthy body are critical to sustaining the demands of leadership and success. When faced with challenges, his philosophy is simple: stay calm, work towards solving the problem—and when something is beyond your control, learn to leave it to fate.

At the core of his journey is gratitude. Gadgil remains deeply indebted to Dajikaka for believing in him and, importantly, giving him the freedom to make his own choices. Family support, he acknowledges, has been equally fundamental.

And perhaps the most telling insight from the conversation was how Gadgil wants to be remembered: Not merely as the person who inherited a legacy, but as the custodian who took it to a different level.

At 49, Gadgil looks back not simply at what he built, but at who he became while building it.
Choosing Gold is therefore not just a story of inheritance. It is a story of identity—of respecting the past without being imprisoned by it, of having the courage to evolve, and of making choices that are truly your own.

Because ultimately, legacy may be inherited. But what you do with it is always a choice

The Indian Association for Gold Excellence & Standards (IAGES) celebrated its first anniversary today at Hotel Sofitel, One BKC, Mumbai with its accredited partners and key representatives of India’s gold value chain. The annual meet commemorated IAGES invaluable contribution towards transforming the gold industry in India by building a transparent, trusted, accountable and ethical ecosystem for both businesses and consumers alike, with its standard code of conduct.

Over the course of the past year, IAGES has built a fast-growing network of 140+ accredited partners spread across 750+ partner outlets in 235+ cities pan India. Some of India’s most reputed brands like GRT, Senco, PNG, Jos Alukkas, WHP, Orient Jewellers, Lagu Bandhu, Pothys, Thangamayil and Jagannath Pednekar as well as small and medium regional and city-based retailers, reflecting the industry’s growing confidence in IAGES’ accreditation framework.

Kaushlendra Sinha, CEO, IAGES, Said:

“The idea of IAGES was conceptualized by World Gold Council on how we can shi ft India’s gold-buying mindset from fear, cynicism and distrust to trust, confidence, and faith in the ecosystem. A year ago, IAGES was created to benefit gold businesses with a valuable third-party-accessed accreditation but also consumers, through a network of trusted and verified gold businesses and jewellers.

When the gold-buying mindset changes at the root level, the industry eventually evolves at large. Over the next 3-5 years, we see India’s gold industry at par with the ethics and business practices of some of the world’s most developed gold markets,”

IAGES has also spent most part of the year tirelessly educating consumers via its ongoing ‘Before you exchange or buy gold, #PehlaCheckIAGES’ campaign, on how to buy gold only from verified sources. Over 50 million consumers have been reached through outdoor advertising, metro branding, digital platforms, and social media initiatives as part of the umbrella campaign.

To change the gold-buying mindset in India and empower consumers with the right tools to make informed decisions, IAGES also launched its Accredited Partner Directory, a first-of-its-kind platform that allows users to search for verified gold businesses by brand, location, or category before they step out to buy or exchange gold. The online directory continues to attract massive number of visitors every day.

India has long been one of the world’s most significant gold markets. IAGES believes the next chapter lies in strengthening the industry’s reputation through greater accountability, customer-centricity, and voluntary adoption of best practices. The association welcomes gold businesses from every corner of the country to join its growing network and play a meaningful role in shaping an industry that future generations can be proud of.
