NDC survey finds Meghan Markle has most popular celebrity engagement ring
The Duchess of Sussex’s ring, was the number-one choice in a poll of 2,000 adults living in the UK
Meghan Markle is the celebrity with the best engagement ring, according to a survey from the Natural Diamond Council (NDC). The Duchess of Sussex’s ring, which features a cushion-cut center stone sourced from Botswana between two smaller diamonds from Princess Diana’s personal collection, was the number-one choice in a poll of 2,000 adults living in the UK, the NDC said Tuesday. Meanwhile, actress Mila Kunis’s round brilliant diamond engagement ring from actor Ashton Kutcher came in second, while singer Adele’s pear-shaped jewel ranked third. Kate Middleton’s ring, featuring an oval blue sapphire center stone with a diamond-halo surround nabbed the fourth spot, while newly engaged Zendaya’s east-west emerald-cut diamond ring from Tom Holland placed number five.
The survey also delved into respondents’ personal preferences, the NDC noted. Nearly half of respondents said if money were no object, they would prefer a white diamond. However, those aged 18 to 24 stated they would opt for a colored diamond, the study found. When it came to cut, round brilliant and emerald were the most popular, each nabbing 12% of the vote. Respondents aged 65 or older preferred rounds, while those between 18 and 24 chose ovals.

Diamond Slump forces Debswana to diversify into copper, platinum and solar
Diamond-centric mining models is giving way to broader resource portfolios
Debswana Diamond Company, the 50–50 joint venture between the Botswana government and De Beers, is moving to diversify into copper, platinum and renewable energy as the prolonged downturn in natural diamond demand pressures earnings and forces the industry to rethink its growth strategy.
The company’s board has approved plans to invest in a portfolio of non-diamond projects after revenue fell 46% in 2024, the latest available financial year, highlighting the scale of the downturn in the global diamond market.

The move signals a strategic shift toward commodities with stronger long-term demand fundamentals, particularly copper, which is central to global electrification and energy-transition infrastructure.
Debswana’s diversification reflects a broader industry pivot as diamond producers confront weak consumer demand, rising competition from lab-grown stones and elevated inventories across the supply chain.
The shift is also visible among smaller exploration companies. Botswana Diamonds recently rebranded as Botswana Minerals, signalling its own strategic focus on copper exploration rather than diamonds.
Together, these moves underscore a growing consensus across the sector: the era of diamond-centric mining models is giving way to broader resource portfolios anchored in energy-transition metals.
