Angola Diamond Production Misses Target

Output Was 45% Lower Than Planned Due To High Operating Costs and Cash Flow Problems.

Angola mined 7.6 million carats of diamonds in the first half of 2026. This is a 10% increase from the 6.9 million carats mined during the same period in 2025, even though global demand for diamonds remains weak.

Despite this growth, total output fell 6% short of the country’s official target.

Why Production Missed the Target

Riverbed (Alluvial) Mines: Output was 45% lower than planned due to high operating costs and cash flow problems.

Hard-Rock (Kimberlite) Mines: Output slightly beat targets by 0.21%. Strong results at the older Catoca mine made up for setup delays at the new Luele mine.

Industry Challenges

Global diamond prices have dropped about 33% since 2022, while prices in Angola have plummeted by 52%. Miguel Vemba, a director at state diamond company ENDIAMA, warned that the market outlook remains difficult due to falling prices and rising pressure on mining companies.

The Qatar Diamond Exchange (QDE) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Borsa Diamanti d’Italia to bolster trade and expand commercial ties between their members, , marking its first strategic alliance with a European bourse.

The agreement was signed by QDE Director Ghanim Nasser Al-Saadi and Italian Diamond Exchange President Luigi Cosma during the World Jewellery Confederation’s (CIBJO) 100th anniversary event in Vicenza, Italy.

Under the terms of the deal, the two exchanges will establish a framework to deepen connection across their respective memberships, exchange invitations to industry events, and facilitate access to tenders, auctions, and viewings through reciprocal visits.

The partnership also aims to boost consumer confidence in natural diamonds and colored gemstones by reinforcing compliance with global sector standards, including guidelines set by the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) and the World Diamond Council’s (WDC) System of Warranties.

The deal follows similar pacts signed by the QDE last month with diamond bourses in Singapore, Shanghai, and Tokyo as part of an effort to broaden its global trading network.
