Festive Season Jewellery Sales: Consumers Display Heightened Selectivity and Caution

Shoppers Are Exercising Greater Discretion—Prioritizing Essential wedding-Related Purchases Over Discretionary Festive Buying.

Published

on

India’s long-standing affinity for gold is entering a critical period of assessment as the country approaches the key festive and wedding buying cycle. While current gold prices reflect a modest single-digit increase compared to the peak of the previous festive period, consumer behavior is shifting toward heightened selectivity and caution.

Consequently, jewellers and industry stakeholders anticipate overall retail sales volumes will remain muted compared to last year’s performance, despite stable year-on-year price differentials.

Key Price Trends & Volatility Profile

The domestic gold market has experienced significant price swings over the past 12 months, shaping buyer sentiment ahead of the major shopping events:

  • Festive Peak (October 2025): Gold traded in a stable range of Rs 1.22 lakh to Rs 1.34 lakh per 10 grams, establishing a benchmark baseline for consumer budgets.
  • Record Highs (January 2026): Prices surged dramatically, breaching an all-time peak of over Rs 2 lakh per 10 grams, driven by global macro uncertainty and market momentum.
  • Pre-Festive Level (September 29, 2026): Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) prices consolidated around Rs 1.46 lakh per 10 grams—reflecting an approximate 9% increase relative to the upper bound of the 2025 festive peak.

Consumer Sentiment & Retail Sales Outlook

Despite the price retracement from the January record high, retail dynamics indicate a disciplined consumer response:

Volume Compression: Industry players forecast that overall gold jewellery sales by volume will fall short of 2025 levels. Consumers are managing fixed budgets by opting for lighter-weight pieces, higher-karat efficiency, or exchanging existing gold holdings rather than purchasing new bullion outright.

Strategic Buying Patterns: Shoppers are exercising greater discretion—prioritizing essential wedding-related purchases over discretionary festive buying.

Value-Conscious Adaptation: While total value metrics may hold steady due to the higher base price per gram, net weight absorption across the retail segment is expected to contract until broader price stability builds long-term confidence.

GJEPC, in association with the Ahilyanagar Gold Jewellers Council and Gold Cluster, organised an IIJS Retailers’ Connect and Export Awareness Seminar in Ahilyanagar, Maharashtra, on 29 September 2026.

The programme aimed to strengthen the region’s participation in international trade under the Districts as Export Hubs (DEH) initiative. Ahilyanagar has a long-standing base of skilled karigars and traditional jewellery manufacturing and was among the early regions in Maharashtra to be formally developed as an MSME Gold Jewellery Cluster under the DEH and Micro & Small Enterprises – Cluster Development Programme (MSE-CDP).

During the IIJS Retailers’ Connect session, Naheed Sunke, Assistant Director, GJEPC, introduced IIJS Signature 2027 as a major B2B sourcing platform for jewellery designs, technology and business networking. She encouraged jewellers from Ahilyanagar to participate through an official delegation.

The export awareness session was led by Mithilesh Pandey, Senior Director, GJEPC, who outlined export opportunities available to local manufacturers and retailers, along with government schemes and policy mechanisms that can support their entry into international markets.

The session covered export benefits available under the DEH initiative and preferential trade opportunities through India’s free trade agreements, including the UAE CEPA, India-Australia ECTA and India-EFTA TEPA. Participants were also briefed on simplified procedures for courier-based e-commerce exports, collateral-free loans under PM Vishwakarma, and grants available for Common Facility Centres (CFCs).

GJEPC also highlighted its support ecosystem for businesses seeking to expand internationally. This included the benefits of Registration-Cum-Membership Certificate (RCMC), exporter mentorship programmes such as Niryat Disha and Niryat Protsahan, international showcasing opportunities through IJEX Dubai, access to the India Jewellery Park Mumbai (IJPM) ecosystem, and Parichay Cards for artisans.
