LGDs add dazzle to Raksha Bandhan

This year, premium rakhis will bear Surat’s stamp across the country. The Gujarat city is already famous as the world’s diamond polishing hub, but in recent years it has also started producing large quantities of lab-grown diamonds (LGD). Yes, the kind that Prime Minister Modi presented to US First Lady Jill Biden on his state visit in June. Ever since, jewellers in Surat have been flooded with orders for LGD rakhis.

Earlier, when mined diamonds were used to make premium rakhis, jewellers made each piece to order. Dipak Choksi of D Khushabhai Jewellers told TOI rakhis with mined diamonds now cost up to Rs 5 lakh each. However, LGD rakhis are pocket-friendly and Surat’s jewellers have a ready stock of rakhis priced from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000 each.

LGDs are cultivated under immense heat and pressure and have the same physical, chemical and optical properties as mined diamonds. Where they differ significantly is in price.
