The Kolhapur police have asked local jewellers to conduct background checks on Bengali artisans before entrusting them with precious metals for ornament-making. The move comes after a series of incidents in which artisans have absconded with significant amounts of gold and silver provided by jewellers. Complaints regarding such incidents have been registered with Rajwada and Laxmipuri police stations.
To monitor suspicious activities, the police will establish a registry of artisans, which will be maintained through the submission of thorough background checks by jewellers. Kuldeep Gaikwad, a former head of the jewellers association from Gujari, has been among those victimised by some of the artisans.
