The Public Awareness Program on FIGHT AGAINST CORRUPTION was organized by Jewellery Youth Forum (India) and supported by GJC, Zaveri Bazaar Welfare Association and Mumbai Wholesale Gold Jewellers Association. In attendance were members of these organizations and leading players and dignitaries from the GJ industry.

The speakers drew attention to corruption and fraud in the context of the jewellery industry. The cases usually included bribery or extortion by officials from GST, IT, ED or persons posing as officials from the aforementioned agencies and extorting from jewellers.

The speakers assured the jewellery fraternity that they are available 24x7; jewellers should not hesitate in calling the help line and lodging a complaint. Their teams will instantly contact and/ or visit the location of the complainant and take the necessary action. They said fear of corrupt officials taking revenge prevented many jewellers from complaining. Also, the jewellers were advised not to agree to “settlement” payment. Jewellers also have the right to check identification of officials who visit the jewelers’ business premises for enquiry or search operations.

P Krishnakant and Ranjeet Kumar Pandey related anecdotes of various cases where timely action resulted in trapping corrupt officials and ensuring they are imprisoned and/or suspended. Members of the jewellery fraternity came forward and related stories of how they have been threatened and harassed by corrupt officials.

The eminent speakers also clarified that their jurisdiction was limited to corruption linked to Central Government agencies. If officials involved in bribery/extortion are from state government agencies, then complaints will be forwarded to the anti-corruption department of the state government.
