Hupari, a small town in Maharashtra's Kolhapur district, has the potential to emerge as a global silver jewellery export hub, akin to Surat's success in diamonds. Recognized as a "silver zone" by the government, Hupari boasts over 40,000 skilled artisans, 60% of whom are women, and 1,200 units specializing in handcrafted silver jewellery such as anklets, chains, and temple ornaments. Its silver anklets have been awarded Geographical Indication (GI) status, ensuring authenticity and enhancing marketability. However, the region currently struggles with outdated machinery, manual production methods, and limited export infrastructure.
GJEPC has taken key initiatives since 2021 to address these challenges. Efforts include conducting awareness seminars, educating artisans about export requirements, and introducing modern technology to improve productivity and quality. Additionally, the establishment of a Common Facility Centre is expected to provide much-needed technical support.
GJEPC Chairman Vipul Shah said, “Hupari (n Kolhapur district) holds the potential to be a thriving silver export hub, echoing Surat’s success in diamonds. The Government’s recognition of Hupari as a ‘silver zone’ and plans for a Common Facility Centre mark important steps forward. Yet, real growth will hinge on targeted investments in technology, artisan training, and international market access. At GJEPC, we see immense promise in Hupari’s artisans and are committed to guiding them on this journey to becoming key players in the global silver jewellery market.”
