GJEPC held a crucial meeting with senior officials from the Department of Consumer Affairs in New Delhi today 13th November to address the growing concern of ensuring transparency in diamond terminology. The discussion centred around the need for mandatory disclosure of diamond origin, whether natural or lab-grown, in exported jewellery. Ms. Nidhi Khare, Secretary, and Mr. Bharat Khera, Additional Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs, acknowledged the significance of the issue and assured the GJEPC of the department’s full support.
Mr. Milan Chokshi, Member, Diamond Panel, GJEPC and Ms. Monika Mohta, Advisor, GJEPC, highlighted the importance of consumer trust and ethical practices within the industry. They urged the government to establish Indian standards that align with international guidelines, such as those set by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO).
