In a lab-grown diamond submitted for testing, Gemological Institute of America (GIA) scientists found a “never-before-seen” cloud feature resembling lines of text from an ancient manuscript.
“The dichotomy of a thoroughly modern diamond with a cloud feature that evoked an ancient text provided an interesting submission,” wrote the authors in the spring 2024 edition of Gems & Gemology, the GIA’s scientific journal.
The “lines” of clouds were a feature they had never seen before, added Sally Eaton-Magaña, senior manager of diamond identification at GIA in Carlsbad; Manisha Bhoir, manager of analytics at GIA in Mumbai; and Girish Dodiya, associate diamond grader at GIA in Surat.
The pear-shaped, 1.67-carat, D-color, SI1 chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond was submitted to the GIA’s Surat laboratory for testing.
